Basically, if you have moved your life to the United States for educational or professional reasons and have been there for a long time, there are possibilities that you would be granted a green card by the federal Government.
Green Cards Explained
This is no ordinary card; it is a powerful proof of identification permitting you to reside and continue with your profession in the US. It is a known fact that the card does not hold an expiry date; which means that the holder doesn’t need to apply for a new one each time it expires. The only thing is that the Government has made it a rule to renew this proof of identification at regular intervals.
Green cards are usually valid for ten years and renewal of green cards should be completed within this time period.
Individuals holding green cards enjoy a permanent status which entitles them to being resident of the state. This authorization card is basically renewed to a fresh version.
Keep the Card up to Date
If the card is not renewed there may be severe consequences that an individual might face. The consequences of an expired green card are given below:
- Being barred from employment
- Difficulties in getting into a job
- Being restricted from re entering the state
In order to avoid such hassle, all individuals are requested to comply with the terms and conditions to update this card to a newer version. In order to be on the safe side, the holder of the card is supposed to apply for a special ‘I 90’ form meant for renewal of the card.
Some of the major requirements for the renewal are given below:
- A personal id (driver’s license or passport). Be sure to check that these documents are valid too.
- Photocopies of your expired green card. Also make it a point to submit both sides of the green card.
If you are citizen of foreign country and have got married or are getting married to someone who is a citizen of the US/permanent resident, then you are entitled to hold a green card too.
